Girls' golf slaughters Strathmore

The Granite Hills girls' golf team has been practicing throughout the summer and every day after school to get ready for the 2012-2013 season.

There are many new faces on the team this year, and three returning players. The team looks solid and they are looking forward to a good season.

The girls' golf team kicked off the season Tuesday, Sept. 4, with a practice match against Delano at the Porterville golf course.

The match started off hectic, as there were two matches scheduled to be played. Lindsay High School has to use the Porterville golf course as their home course for this season, creating complications. Having four teams play on the same course is very time consuming, so most of the Grizzly girls did not get to finish their match.

"It can be tough having so many girls play at once," said girls golf coach Richard Boyd, "but it is just something we may have to get used to.

There were only two girls who have match experience who played  on Tuesday:  number one golfer, Jereniss Alcantar, and the number two girls' golfer, Jazmin Perez. Both girls did well in their first match of the season, though Delano ended up taking the win.

"There is always room for improvement," said junior Jereniss Alcantar, "but I think we did good for our first match."

Granite Hills fell behind during the match, but put up a good fight against a solid Delano team.

The lady Grizzlies had their first league golf match against Strathmore High School on Thursday, Sept. 14. The Grizzlies originally felt that the match against Strathmore was going to be a free pass, as coach Boyd was informed that the Strathmore team did not have enough girls to play. When Strathmore arrived, the Grizzlies were informed that they would be competing.

"I was nervous when I heard that it was going to be a real game," said Perez, "but I did not let that shake me."

The girls started off strong, not letting the six Strathmore girls intimidate them. The Grizzlies stayed strong throughout the whole match never letting Strathmore take the lead.

In the end, the lady Grizzlies defeated Strathmore, each player beating their opponent in single play.

“I was so excited when I heard that we won!” said sophomore Cameron Anderson, “it really raised our hopes.”
