Grizzly football season underway

The Grizzlies are only returning seven of their varsity players from the previous season. This includes: Nisar Abdullah, Abraham Leon, Carlos Lopez, Demonte Taylor, Peter Zamarripa, David Flores, and Fernando Gonzalez.

This season, the Grizzlies will be running a Wing T type offense which will allow their smaller, quicker linemen to handle the business up front. As for the potential on the team this year, the Grizzlies are showing great talent in which every player has the ability to make an explosive play from anywhere on the field.

“I think we’ll be pretty good this year, it might just take us a little bit to really get things going,” said senior Zamarripa.

The Grizzlies already showed a promising start at their scrimmages held at Rankin Stadium Aug. 17.

However, when it came to their first regular season game on Thursday, Aug. 23 against Robert F. Kennedy, the Grizzlies did not look so crisp. Many mistakes were made by both teams that were not made during the scrimmage.

The Grizzlies lost their first game with a final score of 20-6 to RFK. The only offensive touchdown was scored by running back, Abdhulla.

“Obviously the game was going to be a lot different than the scrimmage,” said Abdhulla, “The difference in the speed of the game makes a huge difference.”

There is still a lot of work to be done for this young Grizzly team. With Shafter coming up this week, a very competitive team, the Grizzlies will have their work cut out for them. The Shafter game will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 pm at Shafter High School.
