All the runners did very well on the race. I think some of the kids still wanted to finish on one of the top runners but they still did good. I feel sorry for the girl that could not finish the race. She would have been like in first place.

The Granite Hills cross-country team competed against their new league competitors at their second home meet, on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Schools that competed were: Strathmore, Lindsay, Corcoran, Sierra Pacific, and Woodlake.

Granite’s course isconsidered one of the toughest courses out there, considering that most runners aren’t used to running up hills.

Christopher Lara, a sophomore at Strathmore High was not a fan of Granite‘s Hills.

“This course is so brutal,” said Lara.

On the other hand, the Grizzlies felt comfortable on their home turf.

“I felt confident because I knew the course,” said freshman cross-country runner, Jorge Flores. “It was just like another practice to me.”

Flores came in fifth in the JV boys race.

But not all the runners had the same luck. Carla Garcia, a junior at Granite, was not able to finish the race after a sudden breathing mishap.

Fortunately, the rest of her teammates were able make it to the finish line without any problems. Junior, Julia Navarrete, was able to push hard at the last 100 meters to secure second place.

“I always know that if I don’t finish strong, it will feel like I didn’t finish at all,” said Navarrete. “Hopefully, [my] finishing hard encourages others to go harder. I tell myself, to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”

Caleb Reynaga and Zack Paulson also did a fantastic job for boys’ varsity. Paulson came in sixth with the time of 19:04 and Reynaga came in seventh with the time of 19:21.

“Overall everyone tried their best, and most runners did great, “said Chris Ross coach of the cross-country team.
