What measures success? Is it the amount of vacation time you receive or is it the amount of money you have in your wallet? Who decides what being successful is?

Only you know the real answer to these questions. Success is what you determine it is. You decide if the man with the happy family and the minimum wage paycheck is more successful than the billionaire with a bachelor pad and tab at the hottest club.

Dictionary.com’s definition is also unclear of what the meaning of success is. The definitions range from “the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like” to “obsolete.”

Yareli Robledo, a junior at Granite Hills told the Gazette, “Trying your best even though you may not be the best is what real success is. If you reach high points in your life without trying, it wasn’t your success; it belongs to the people who helped you there.”

Most people relate success to celebrities and athletes. For example, one of the highest paid athletes, Floyd Mayweather, a boxer who earned over $85 million dollars, is also known for his quick wins.

Oprah Winfrey, the $165 million earner in one year, is known for her multiple successful television shows and not to mention her growing network, OWN.

It comes down to where success comes from and how it is measured. Success is what one makes of the opportunities she encounters and how hard one works to get there.

Here is my advice for success: Think of your goal, a really big goal. Don’t go little on this one. Think of the dream you had when you were young. Yes, that goal that you gave up on because you had to grow up and realize the world is a harder and scarier place than first thought.

Now take that goal and cut it up into smaller goals. Smaller goals are easier to achieve and reaching goal after goal will also help boost your self-esteem.

It is simple. Success is a mindset. Are you going to take the path of success or the path of mediocrity?
