While we attend high school as teenagers, we begin to explore the world of sports. We experiment and try our luck with the different options.
Sometimes the world of high school athletics is biased and unfair. There are plenty of other sports other than football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. It is difficult for students to discover other fall sports, such as, water polo, cross-country, tennis, and golf when, football receives all the publicity.
Athletes in these less publicized sports work just as hard as those involved in the popular ones. It doesn't matter what sport an athlete plays, he should be respected and recognized by other athletes as equals. So what if it is not a contact sport? So what if it is not popular, it does not matter.
I believe a true athlete respects all sports and belittles none.
Football, being one of America's favorite past times does not help at all. I have heard football players tell other athletes from tennis, cross-country, water polo, etc. “Play a REAL sport!”
I absolutely cannot stand this disrespect whatsoever! Because so much attention is paid to the more popular sports, sometimes we make the students involved in them feel superior to other athletes. All because we have made them feel important like they're the big dogs on campus. Their sport is not the only one that matters.
If we advertised every sport like we do to football, we would have more students involved in sports. If we publicized other sports more effectively, it could change the attitudes of students and negatives associated with other sports.
Recognition is something students involved in the other sports want. Believe me when I tell you that the students involved in other sports get angry and frustrated when they never hear anything about their sport in the announcements.
What makes it worse is that because of everything that goes on, the students start to develop negative attitudes towards those involved with the monopolizing of the athletic system and those involved in the more popular sports.
Why can't we all accept that all sports are equal and that no one sport is superior to the other? It's sad that we're always teaching students not to discriminate... but we are accepting the belittling of other sports on campus.

I agree with this. Every sport is different though. A football player may not be able to run 5+ miles a day but a cross country probaly wouldnt be able to put on gear and play 4 quarters of getting hit. Every sport is different but indeed not all sports are recognized.
