Porterville Unified School District’s Measure J provides funding for two areas within PUSD: technology and inadequate facilities.

Technology will be addressed “both in an infrastructure standpoint and individual devices for students” stated John Snavely, the Porterville Unified School district Superintendent.

The measure will also create permanent facilities in areas with portable classrooms and will repair and update outdated facilities around the district. Benefits will apply to the whole city.

“Politicians need to pay more attention to the youth and their education because we are the leaders of tomorrow,” commented Taylor Merritt, a concerned student of PUSD.

With better schools, home values will go up and businesses and homebuyers will move into the city. From a business aspect, businesses look for good schools with thriving programs and facilities. Measure J would not only make our district better, but also improve our city.

When asked about how much the measure would cost the average homeowner, Snavely stated, “Measure will cost $45 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. Assessed valuation is determined at the time the property is purchased and has no direct relationship to the current value of a home. For example, a home purchased 20 years ago for $50,000 may, today, be worth $200,000 but the assessed valuation is still $50,000 plus a two percent annual inflation.”

Measure J is a necessity to the city of Porterville. With the growth of home values and improving business climate, the economy in Porterville will continue to improve and provide a stronger future to Porterville’s next generation of leaders.

Measure J sounds helpful to all highschool, education, and the community but how do we know that it will be used towards education? Measure J will higher taxes for education but is it really for education or a new stadium and pool for only certain schools? or is that the new technology that we are asking for?

I think there are some things that are necessary for school and Measure J covers some of those things. But what you do not mention in this article is the new stadium they want to build which isn't necessary.

Measure J is good in some ways, but did they mention what was in the fine print?? Measure J will also higher taxes for a new stadium and a new pool. What's wrong with our stadium and pool???? They think it will be good in the long run, but what about the cost of maintenance??? Certain aspects of Measure J are great (fixing classrooms and promoting new technology), but the football field and pool are unnecessary. Good article though!!! :)
