The Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar is an incredible opportunity for sophomores.

They learn to develop skills in meeting new people, gaining confidence, and making a difference in the community.

I attended HOBY two years ago and it has opened the door to many new opportunities.

When I was first on my way to HOBY, I was shy and nervous about having to introduce myself to so many new people. Students were immediately forced to do ice breakers and everyone instantly began having fun and introducing themselves to each other.

At the camp, we did numerous activities and learned a variety of chants and cheers to keep us involved and interactive in just the first few hours of arriving. While at HOBY, there were two community service projects that I accomplished.

The first service project, “Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” was designed to raise and generate funds for cancer research. We traveled to a local grocery store, where we set up the stands and sold lemonade for a few hours.

Blanket making for young cancer patients was my second service project. This project allowed the students to bring and make their own fleece patterns and amalgamate them with other patterns to make soft blankets that were distributed to children’s hospitals.

Learning how to work with new people helped me build my self-confidence.

I encourage every sophomore to apply for the HOBY seminar by meeting with your counselor and asking for the application.

The application requires that students write a personal essay. Next, students will receive a date to be interviewed by a panel of five people. The interview will last about 10 minutes and each person on the panel will ask one question. At the end of the interview, the interviewers add up their scores combining the interview and the essay. The person with the most points becomes Granite Hills’ HOBY representative.

HOBY is a great opportunity for all sophomores. Learning how to meet people with confidence is a skill that many people lack and HOBY is the perfect place that is able to teach these important skills.

Just going through the interview itself is another great experience. I feel that the more interviews a person goes through in life, the easier interviews become. For students who have never been interviewed, this is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience.
