College is the gateway to a better life, but sometimes the answers to certain questions are never clear.

But Tony Losongco, a Yale Outreach representative, gave some tips and answers to some students here at Granite Hills.

The informational meeting was held Tuesday, Sept. 11 in room 205/206 where a handful of seniors, a class of juniors, three sophomores, and a freshman sat and listened to the presentation about life at Yale and the questions often associated with attending an Ivy League university.

Teacher Evan Hackett said that a major reason students don’t apply to Yale is due to the mindset that they don’t believe they could make it due to the community they come from. Losongco said never think that Yale isn’t an option for seniors applying to college. “There’s not going to be any class or score that will cut you off, but getting a good score is just one part in applying, but it’s not the only thing we look at.”

Many students asked about the cost associated with attending Yale. Losongco said that Yale offers financial assistance to anyone who asks for it and will help work out how much each family will be responsible for paying. In Losongco’s personal case, his family was only required to pay $32 out of $33,000 tuition.

However, Losongco said that before working on the financial details, it is important to get accepted first. “If you don’t get accepted, the best financial aid won’t do you any good.”

Currently Granite Hills has one alumnus, Robert Fuentes, attending Yale as a graduate law student.

I was at that meeting and it seemed pretty good. It helped to cheer me up that I will be able to a great college once I graduate.

It's great that Yale is sending people even to a small town like Porterville. Hopefully other major universities acknoledge us as well
