Granite Hills High School had its first dance Friday, Aug. 17, 2012.

The students that attended the dance spoke about how few students participate in school activities including the dance. One of the main issues at Granite is trying to get Grizzlies more involved with school dances.

At Granite, over 85 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. If students cannot even afford their lunch at school, then getting money for school dances would be difficult as well.

“I don’t have enough money, time, and transportation,” said sophomore Leonardo Soria.

Even though the Associated Student Body class at Granite tries its best to make the dances worthwhile, most students still do not attend a lot of the school dances.

“I hear the dances aren’t that great and few people go,” junior Andres Zavala, “The reason why hardly anyone goes is because few people go to begin with.”

That is not the case with other high schools in town where many students make it a priority to attend the dances. Even students from Granite go to other school dances.

Even though other school’s dances are known to be really fun, the fact that so many people go causes it to be crowded and stuffy.

“Even though everyone loves and goes to the Monache dances, I don’t go because everyone is drenched in sweat and there is even an inch of sweat on the floor,” said Zander Short, senior at Monache High School.

Another reason why many students do not attend Granite’s school dances is because of conflicting times due to sports.

“The dances I’ve been to are alright but it’s always hot as in the temperature. I plan on going to more dances this year,” said senior Zack Ojinaga, “Our first dance I didn’t go to because I was too tired from water polo practice.”

There are many different reasons why students from Granite do not attend their own dances. This year is a time for change, trying to get more Grizzles to attend.

ASB is trying to make it easier on the students this year, so that everyone can join in on the grizzly fun.

“The Granite Hills ASB is trying to look for funds and fundraise to make the dances cheaper,” said ASB president Ashlee Halopoff, “ASB is a very expensive program, but at the same time we want to incorporate everyone.”

Honestly, i think the attendance to the school dances are poor because of the cost and because of the lack of "heads-up". My mom does not allow me to go to events on short notice... I have to let her know at least a week before... We need more time to make sure it is ok for us to attend.

The reason why many students don't attend the school dances is because they hear many negative comments about the dances. Those students who do attend complain about the DJ not being good and so this causes the other students to believe that the school dances are no fun.
