Over the summer, many students from Granite Hills High School enjoyed their vacation by going to a variety of summer camps.

Mayra Puente and Jesus Campos, seniors at Granite Hills, had the opportunity to attend the Migrant Scholars Leadership Institute (MSLI) during summer vacation. Puente and Campos enrolled in an accredited social studies course and a variety of workshops. One of the main workshops Puente and Campos were involved with was learning about culture and the injustice that are inflicted on the Latin community.

Not only did Puente and Campos gain a variety of leadership skills, but also experienced living as a typical university student at University of California, Los Angeles, for an entire month.

“I would definitely recommend other students to attend MSLI. Students will truly treasure the knowledge they gain and the friendships they form,” said Puente.

Another camp available to students was Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) which is a camp dedicated to training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. Junior Jose Gonzalez was one of the few selected to experience this camp during summer vacation.

While at HOBY, Gonzalez was able to listen to a variety of guest speakers and participate in different community service activities.

“I had a lot of fun,” said Gonzalez, “I was able to meet many new people with the same interest as me.”

Camp Country Jamboree is a camp that high school students can participate in. Students interact and bond for four days with children that have or have siblings with cancer.

“I really enjoyed bonding with all the campers,” said junior Xavier Baca.

Camp Country Jamboree is a great experience for students from different schools to come together and spend a week with children in need.

“Cancer camp was incredibly life changing. It was with no doubt super amazing,” said senior Janelle Castillo.

Bradley Stailey, senior at Granite Hills, was chosen to attend this year’s California Boys State 2012. Over a course of a week, Stailey was able to create a mock government at a state level. Stailey even got to experience living in dorm rooms at Sacramento State.

“It was a great experience,” said Stailey, “I came back with a better understanding of government and politics.”

Madison Rice, senior, was chosen to attend California Girl’s State 2012. Rice was also able to participate in creating a mock government, meet new people, and gain a better understanding of government and politics.

“I had so much fun,” said Rice, “I got to meet so many new people while I was at Girl’s State.”

Another leadership camp available over the summer is Camp Royal. Students were able to develop leadership skills and practice them if the variety of actives they had to participate in.

“I really enjoyed interacting with others,” said senior Crystal Ruiz, “I really liked being able to do things independently.”

Going to summer camps not only keeps students busy but it also build character. Summer camps are a great way to make new friends and stay involved here at Granite Hills.

Summer camps look like a fun way to spend our summer. Lets face it, not most of us go out everyday. We sit and watch tv or go on facebook and twitter! However if we do summer camps were out and spending our time valuieing the beautiful world around us. In my opinion this seems like something I could next summer.

It is good to know that students from Granite are attending these kinds of things. I think that all of the summer camps that were mentioned in this article all sound really cool and fun. I think that if i were to attend any of them, I would enjoy the experience. I also agree that summer camps are a good way to keep kids busy over summer.

Summer camps are a great way to keep busy during your summer. I have attended Camp Country Jamboree and it was very fun. I've been going to summer camps for the past 4 years and I highly recommend to add them to your Summer to do list. Maddy
