A new year at Granite Hills calls for a new Agriculture advisor.
For the past 13 years, Danell Daniel had been teaching the agriculture department at Granite Hills High school.Daniel always worked with the Future Farmers of America officers, taking them to different conferences like the Made for Excellence, Advanced Leadership Academy, or even the State conference. She was a dedicated teacher and had much love for the FFA program.
“Mrs. Daniel was one of the best teachers here at Granite. She made being in FFA fun and her passion for the program was very strong. I always looked forward to going to her class,” said junior Sierra Lopez.
Lopez ran for the 2012-13 FFA officers because she enjoyed the program and wanted to help make the club stronger.
Daniel was transferred to Strathmore High school and Granite was assigned a new Ag advisor. Audrey Collar was given the position.
Collar grew up on a small farm in Hanford and was in FFA and 4-H as a child. She attended and graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. There she majored in animal science and decided to go into teaching. Her occupation as the Ag advisor here at Granite is her first job.
“I love it,” said Collar, “Students are great, there’s a great faculty here and the facilities are amazing.”
Change is not always bad. With a new teacher, FFA members are looking forward to going on more leadership conferences, going to more regional meetings, helping out with judging contests, and participating in many other fun activities.
“I’ve always wanted to be part of the horticulture judging panel. I’ve been growing and showing plants for the past four years and I would like to see how they judge so when the fair comes around, I’ll know what the judges will be looking for and I would be able to improve my SAE,” said senior Madison Rice.
Rice is the 2012-13 Granite Hills FFA president and is looking forward to a new year.
“I hope to expand the FFA program,” Collar said.
As Collar hopes to expand the program, many students are unaware of everything the FFA program has to offer and what it means.
“FFA stands for Future Farmers of America and is a leadership organization for students who are interested in agriculture and offers wonderful opportunities and I encourage every student to get involved,” Collar said.

This sounds like fun. This class is a good chance for students to learn about this kind of stuff. Not every student in the district has the chance to learn about agriculture. We are lucky.

Even though we lost Mrs. Daniels as an Ag teacher I believe having Mrs. Collar will be a good gain towards our Ag department. Mrs. Collar seems like a nice teacher and she seems to know her material, so she will be a beneficial gain for Granite Hills.
