Many would say that in life it is important to have big dreams.

Without having those big dreams, you do not have an idea of how you want your life to be. But sometimes being a dreamer can hurt you when you are suddenly faced with the harsh reality.

Kids have always been told to have big dreams when growing up, which they should, but what that does is give the child high expectations for their life. Sometimes what they dream of being is not very realistic, which can in turn hurt the child emotionally. For example, most children grow up looking up to people who are completely fictional. If the people that your child looks up to are fictional, that means their expectations of life are also fictional. Can you remember how you felt when you first found out that Santa Claus was not real? Your heart dropped, because something that you thought was true turned out to be just a story. While it is good to let kids be kids and enjoy their innocence, there comes a time when they have to face reality.

"I feel that when one is a child, all they should do is dream. Adults cannot dream anymore, so they must live realistically. But teenagers, the middle stage, must learn how to balance dreaming and reality," said junior Juan Jaimez.

It is important to learn how to balance the two. Without dreaming, it seems like life is boring. It is always fun to have big dreams, but when it comes to actually pursuing them, you need to get a reality check. Maybe if you are truly dedicated to living out your dream you can accomplish it, but without even the littlest bit of realism, you cannot get very far in the world.

Some may argue that being realistic makes you depressed, whereas being a dreamer and thinking more positively makes you happier, but that is not the case. When you force yourself to think in a positive way, you are setting a high standard for yourself that you may not be able to achieve. On the other hand, when you think realistically, you have a less chance of disappointment.

Life would be a lot easier if all you had to do was dream or think positively, but sadly, it is not as easy as that. It is important to keep a realistic state of mind.

"I think it is important to think realistically because not everything goes the way you would want it to, and if you have a realistic look on things, you won't feel like you were let down as much," says Ali Wright, a sophomore here at Granite Hills.

I could not agree any more. I have learned from my own experiences that dreaming will not get you anywhere unless you work hard for what you want. No matter how hard you dream or wish for something to happen, it cannot just appear out of nowhere for you and make everything okay. Some things are just not possible, and it is something that you have to get used to in life.

When all people have are dreams, it is easy for them to get lost in them. Thinking realistically is the way to go.

I agree with this article, you have to wake up and smell the coffee. Face reality like it is, even if it reality isn't pleasant.
